Meet Ian

I'm Ian Hobbs, a therapist and the founder of Ironwood Counseling. Before becoming a therapist, I served in the United States Marine Corps and spent 16 years in law enforcement.

My path to the therapy room wasn't a traditional one. Those experiences shaped how I understand trauma, stress, responsibility, identity, and the ways people learn to keep functioning even when something is taking a toll.

They also shape the way I approach therapy today: practical, straightforward, collaborative, and grounded in the realities of life outside the therapy office.

16 Years in Law Enforcement

My Background

Before becoming a therapist, I served in the United States Marine Corps, including a deployment to Iraq, followed by 16 years in law enforcement.

My experience in those fields gives me some familiarity with the culture, demands, and stress that can come with military service and public safety. It’s part of what led to my interest in working with trauma, first responders, veterans, and others who have spent a lot of time taking care of responsibilities while putting themselves second.

That background is part of what I bring to therapy, but it doesn’t define my practice. I work with adults from a wide range of backgrounds and experiences.
